ZEN reports:
Scenario was pretty fun, although I was disappointed in many
aspects.
I'll start with the good parts.
This was hands down the best sportsmanship game-wide I have
ever seen in any day of recball or scenario ball. Not once
did I see or personally encounter a single act of bonus balling,
wiping, arguing with other players, or general misbehavior.
When another player yelled "check your arm/pods/shin"
across the field it was almost guaranteed the receiving player
would stop, check himself, and declare in or out. Even more
amazingly, there were no problems with people continuing to
shoot at players who were checking themselves for paint. This
is game was absolutely the friendly and sportsmanlike spirit
of scenario paintball embodied.
This is the second time I've played at Saluda Paintball and
both times were very much like this. Even with Carolina Riot
making up an entire team in the last scenario (Pirates of
the Saluda) the environment stayed very friendly and sportsmanlike
(although I most certainly did see incidents of bonus balling,
wiping, etc at that event). I have to really give credit to
Country and his staff for running clean, well controlled,
and well organized games. Kudos galore to Country and staff.
Again.
Now for the bad...
Team Elves seemed to control the field for the entire game
with very little effort and frequently were ordered back to
allow Team Santa to emerge from whatever corner we had pinned
them into. We thought we completed every mission we were assigned
and believed we had generally dominated the game.
Meanwhile, Team Santa seemed to also be completing all of
their missions, as they won the scenario something like 1600-1500.
What might you ask was the problem?
The mission objectives of both teams must have rarely been
in opposition. When we were told to take a fort, we did. When
we were told to hold a fort we did. When we were told to stop
them from touching the tarp teepee we did. Usually, we didn't
just complete the objective, we hammered them back to their
respawn until they were basically "touching-in"
and going 15 feet back to the front lines.
How we could have maintained such utter domination all day
long and still lost is seemingly unfathomable.
My other complaint is that having a respawn on the cinder
block hill is absolute hell. Climbing that thing is a serious
chore. In my opinion, no team should ever have to maintain
its respawn on the hill for more than say... 30 minutes. It
gets to the point where people would rather sit out the next
hour than walk the mere 40 yards up that torturous, slippery
ascent. I'm not sure how long or if Team Santa ever got stuck
with their spawn up there, but I know it was a nightmare for
us for 3+ hours, and I know we had a very similar problem
during Pirates of the Saluda.
And one final complaint. Country should not be the only one
at the field capable of filling air. Now I'll grant that it
was never a major inconvenience to wait for him to come back
to the hut and refill, but what if there had been 100 people
there? 150? With two people permanently stationed at the hut,
it would have been good if either of them could work the tanks.
Just a thought.
And finally, although I was the only member of Section 8
to play the game, I gua-ron-tee that "our" presence
was felt. I finished the day with 38 kills to 8 deaths, with
3-4 of those essentially intentional. I racked up 6 surrenders
from close range, and every time it seemed for Team Santa
like there were about to push us off our objective, there
I'd come right up from behind and wipe out their entire team.
I must have done that 5 times. My personal highlight of the
day was sneaking right into red fort (which was also their
respawn at the time) with 4 reds guarding it and eliminating
3 with the last one scurrying off into the woods. Oh man that
was good stuff. It's just too bad I have to relate these stories
verbally with the odor of "the fish that got away"
hanging all around them. Oh, but soon that won't be the case.
I should have my helmet cam in the mail by tomorrow.
